Facilitation enhances ecosystem function with non‐random species gains

چکیده

Facilitation, an ecological interaction assembling plant communities worldwide, has been shown to modulate both species richness and ecosystem functions. Such a biodiversity–ecosystem functioning (BEF) relationship can be decomposed into different components not only related losses gains but also the identity of context in which they live. Using extension classical BEF approach named CAFE (community assembly ecosystems), we quantified contribution these Spanish semiarid community shaped by facilitation. We used as measure for biodiversity cover proxy multiple functions including productivity, soil protection, fertility microbial productivity. Nurse plants doubled number that live beneath them relative open ground, caused five‐fold increase cover. The disproportionate was consequence enhanced nurse plants, were more productive than average. discuss results terms sampling effects (i.e. higher probability richer harbour hyperproductive species) complementary enhancing productivity through resource partitioning, abiotic facilitation or biotic feedbacks). enhancement produces incorporating with high functional values may reverberate among other trophic levels propagate beyond local scale where is produced.

Terrestrial ecosystem responses to species gains and losses.

Ecosystems worldwide are losing some species and gaining others, resulting in an interchange of species that is having profound impacts on how these ecosystems function. However, research on the effects of species gains and losses has developed largely independently of one another. Recent conceptual advances regarding effects of species gain have arisen from studies that have unraveled the mech...

Facilitation by ecosystem engineers enhances nutrient effects in an intertidal system

Ecosystem engineering research has recently demonstrated the fundamental importance of non-trophic interactions for food-web structure. Particularly, by creating benign conditions in stressful environments, ecosystem engineers create hot beds of elevated levels of recruitment, growth, and survival of associated organisms; this should fuel food webs and promote production on the ecosystem scale....
